Chapter 10.2, Problem 27PB
Body language In an experiment investigating body language (M. Koppensteiner et al., Personality and Individual Differences, vol. 74, 2015, pp. 182–185), researchers turned short video clips of randomly selected speeches by male and female politicians into an animated, gender-neutral stickfigure clip. These clips showed the movements of the upper body parts during the speech. Each clip was rated (on a scale from −100 to 100) by a random sample of students in terms of personality traits. For one trait measuring the perceived dominance of a speaker, the following statistics on the scores were reported (a higher score means higher dominance):
- a. Set up the hypotheses for a significance test to analyze whether the population
mean score differs between clips based on a male or female speaker. - b. Using software in which you can use summary statistics (or access the data set at the book’s website), find the P-value for the significance test. Interpret it and report the conclusion for a significance level of 0.05.
- c. If you were to construct a 95% confidence interval for the difference in population means, would it contain 0? Answer based on the result of part b, without actually finding the interval.

The article "Vehicle-Arrival Characteristics at Urban Uncontrolled Intersections" (V.
Rengaraju and V. Rao, Journal of Transportation Engineering, 1995: 317-323) presents
data on traffic characteristics at 10 intersections in Madras, India. One characteristic
measured was the speeds of the vehicles traveling through the intersections. The
accompanying table gives the 15th, 50th, and 85th percentiles of speed (in km/h) for two
intersections.

If a histogram for speeds of vehicles through intersection A were drawn, would it most
likely be skewed to the left, skewed to the right, or approximately symmetric? Explain.

Researchers investigate how the presence of cell phones influence the quality of human interaction. Subjects are randomly selected from a population and divided into an experimental group that is asked to leave their phones in the front of the room and a control group that are not asked to leave their cell phones at the front of the room. Subjects are left alone for 10 minutes and then asked to take a survey designed to measure quality of interactions they had with others in the experiment. What statistical test is appropriate?
Emoticons, like ☺ and ☹, are helpful for expressing emotion in communications that otherwise have limited emotional content (e.g., emails, text messages, and social media posts). Derks, Bos, and von Grumbkow (2007) conducted an independent sample experiment to study the effect of social context and emotion on the use of emoticons. Four groups of participants were instructed to use an internet chat program and the researchers measured the number of emoticons produced by participants. The first group of participants was instructed to communicate about an emotionally positive task (e.g., organizing a group project). The second group of participants was instructed to communicate about an emotionally positive socio-emotional event (e.g., brainstorming about a friend’s birthday). The third group was treated like the first group, except that task was emotionally negative and the fourth group was treated like the second group, except that the socio-emotional event was emotionally negative.…

Participants in this study were 30 students in an upper-division communications course at Cornell University who received course credit for participation. Participants were asked to record all of their social interactions for a week, making note of any lies told. Based on data from these records, the authors of the paper concluded that students lie more often in phone conversations than in face-to-face conversations and more often in face-to-face conversations than in e-mail.
