Explanation of Solution
Given information: The light bulb in a flashlight is at focus of the parabolic reflector, 1,5 centimeters from the vertex of the reflector (see figure)
Calculation:
Since focus lie on positive x -axis and to the right side of vertex , therefore, the standard equation of parabola is of form
where ( h,k ) is the position of vertex of parabola and a is distance of focus from vertex.
Here, the position of vertex is (0,0) ,so
h =0 and k =0
Also focus of parabolic reflector lies at distance 1.5 centimeters from the vertex of the reflector ,so
a= 1.5
Therefore, standard equation of parabola is
