Concept explainers
A two-stage clinical trial is planned for testing H0: p = .10 versus Ha: p > .10, where p is the proportion of responders among patients who were treated by the protocol treatment. At the first stage, 15 patients are accrued and treated. If 4 or more responders are observed among the (first) 15 patients, H0 is rejected, the study is terminated, and no more patients are accrued. Otherwise, another 15 patients will be accrued and treated in the second stage. If a total of 6 or more responders are observed among the 30 patients accrued in the two stages (15 in the first stage and 15 more in the second stage), then H0 is rejected. For example, if 5 responders are found among the first-stage patients, H0 is rejected and the study is over. However, if 2 responders are found among the first-stage patients, 15 second-stage patients are accrued, and an additional 4 or more responders (for a total of 6 or more among the 30) are identified, H0 is rejected and the study is over.1
a Use the binomial table to find the numerical value of α for this testing procedure.
b Use the binomial table to find the probability of rejecting the null hypothesis when using this rejection region if p = .30.
c For the rejection region defined above, find β if p = .30.

- Based on information from a previous study, r1 = 39 people out of a random sample of n1 = 105 adult Americans who did not attend college believe in extraterrestrials. However, out of a random sample of n2 = 105 adult Americans who did attend college, r2 = 50 claim that they believe in extraterrestrials. Does this indicate that the proportion of people who attended college and who believe in extraterrestrials is higher than the proportion who did not attend college? Use ? = 0.01. What is the value of the sample test statistic? (Test the difference p1 − p2. Do not use rounded values. Round your final answer to two decimal places.)(c) Find (or estimate) the P-value. (Round your answer to four decimal places.)arrow_forwardA large manufacturing company investigated the service it received from its suppliers and discovered that, in the past, 38% of all material shipments were received late. However, the company recently installed a just-in-time system in which suppliers are linked more closely to the manufacturing process. A random sample of 150 deliveries since the just-in-time system was installed reveals that 33 deliveries were late. If we want to test whether the proportion of late deliveries was reduced signicantly at = 0:10 the null and alternative hypotheses are a. Null hypothesis (H0) b.
