Chapter 10.4, Problem 1RQ
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The reason of energy crisis needs to be explained.

Concept introduction: Law of conservation of energy states that conversions of energy from one form to another is possible but creation or destroy of energy is impossible. This law indicates that energy of the universe is constant.

Answer to Problem 1RQ

Energy crisis indicates the crisis of good quality energy.

Explanation of Solution

The crisis of energy is not about the quantity in energy rather the quality of energy. Let’s take the example of an automobile trip using gasoline. In burning of gasoline, the stored energy of the gasoline and the oxygen changed to thermal energy which spread along the highway. The quantity of energy remains same as before the trip starts but the distribution of energy concentrated in gasoline takes place. And the energy concentrated in gasoline is more convenient to use. So, the usefulness of energy degrades.

Conclusion

When energy is used to do work degrade of usefulness of energy occurs.
