Chapter 11, Problem 29E
You recently received the following note from the production supervisor of the company where you serve as controller. “I don’t understand these crazy variable-overhead efficiency variances. My employees are very careful in their use of electricity and production supplies, and we use very little indirect labor. What are we supposed to do?” Write a brief memo responding to the production supervisor’s concern.

Comment on the following statement made by a plant manager: “Meetings with my plant accountant are frustrating. All he wants to do is pin the blame on someone for the many variances he reports.”
The head of production at your manufacturing facility said, “Our manufacturing processes are doing great. All our variances for materials, labor, and overhead are favorable. Actual costs for all our products are far below standard costs. We are killing it!” You, as company controller, just shake your head and think of how your respond to the head of production. What would you say?
Harper has just been hired at SB Polo Supply as a managerial accountant. One of his responsibilities was preparing for variance analysis for direct materials required in the manufacture of polo mallets. He went out for lunch without finishing the variance analysis. While he was gone, a janitor came in and seeing the scattered sheets, he picked them up and left before Harper came back. Harper was surprised to find that the analysis sheet he made was gone. He remembered, however, that each mallet requires 2 feet of wood per foot and that there were 4,000 mallets completed during April. In addition, he remembered that the materials price variance was $820 favorable and the total materials variance was $20 favorable. 8,200 materials were purchased and used up.
Instructions Using a matrix:
Calculate the materials quantity variance.
Calculate the standard price.
Calculate the actual price paid in total and per foot of wood.

- Pat Miranda, the new controller of Vault Hard Drives, Inc., has just returned from a seminar on the choice of the activity level in the predetermined overhead rate. Even though the subject did not sound exciting at first, she found that there were some important ideas presented that should get a hearing at her company. After returning from the seminar, she arranged a meeting with the production manager, J. Stevens, and the assistant production manager, Marvin Washington. Pat: I ran across an idea that I wanted to check out with both of you. It’s about the way we compute predetermined overhead rates. J.: We’re all ears. Pat: We compute the predetermined overhead rate by dividing the estimated total factory overhead for the coming year, which is all a fixed cost, by the estimated total units produced for the coming year. Marvin: We’ve been doing that as long as I’ve been with the company. J.: And it has been done that way at every other company I’ve worked at, except at most…arrow_forwardWhat internal control or procedure(s) would provide protection against the following threats?
