Chapter 11, Problem 67CR

When a surgeon repairs injuries, sutures (stitched knots) are used to hold together and stabilize the injured area. If these knots elongate and loosen through use, the injury may not heal properly because the tissues would not be optimally positioned. Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, tied a series of different types of knots with two types of suture material, Maxon and Ticron.

Suppose that 112 tissue specimens were available and that for each specimen the type of knot and suture material were randomly assigned. The investigators tested the knots to see how much the loops elongated. The elongations (in mm) were measured and the resulting data are summarized here.

For purposes of this exercise, assume it is reasonable to regard the elongation distributions as approximately normal.

The Coruro’s Burrow. The subterranean coruro (Spalacopus cyanus) is a social rodent that lives in large colonies in underground burrows that can reach lengths of up to 600 meters. Zoologists S. Begall and M. Gallardo studied the characteristics of the burrow systems of the subterranean coruro in central Chile and published their findings in the paper “Spalacopus cyanus (Rodentia: Octodontidae): An Extremist in Tunnel Constructing and Food Storing among Subterranean Mammals” (Journal of Zoology, Vol. 251, pp. 53–60). A sample of 51 burrows had the depths, in centimeters (cm), presented on the WeissStats site. Use the technology of your choice to do the following. a. Obtain a normal probability plot, boxplot, histogram, and stemand-leaf diagram of the data. b. Based on your results from part (a), can you reasonably apply the t-interval procedure to the data? Explain your reasoning. c. Find and interpret a 90% confidence interval for the mean depth of all subterranean coruro burrows.
3) An inventor has developed a new spray coating that is designed to improve the wear of bicycle tires. To test the new coating, the inventor randomly selects one of the two tires on each of 50 bicycles to be coated with the new spray. The bicycle is then driven for 100 miles and the amount of the depth of the tread left on the two bicycle tires is measured (in millimeters). It is desired to determine whether the new spray coating improves the wear of the bicycle tires. The data and summary information is shown below: Bicycle | Coated Tire (C) | Non-Coated Tire (N) 0.785 1.452 1.634 0.844 50 1.211 0.954 Coated Non-Coated Difference Мean 1.38 0.85 0.53 Std. A) z = 62.46 В) — 34.25 C) z = 55.26 D) z = 23.02
A router is used to cut locating notches on a printed circuit board. The vibration level at the surface of the board as it is cut is considered to be a major source of dimensional variation in the notches. Two factors are thought to influence vibration: bit size (A) and cutting speed (B). Two bit sizes (1/16 and 1/8 inch) and two speeds (40 and 90 rpm) are selected, and four boards are cut at each set of conditions shown below. The response variable is vibration measured as a resultant vector of three accelerometers (x, y, and z) on each test circuit board. (a) Analyze this experiment assuming that each one of the four replicates represent a block. (b)
