Is injecting medical cement effective in reducing pain for people who have suffered fractured vertebrae? The paper “A Randomized Trial of Vertebroplasty for Osteoporotic Spinal Fractures” (New England Journal of Medicine [2009]: 569-578) describes an experiment to compare patients who underwent vertebroplasty (the injection of cement) to patients in a placebo group who underwent a fake procedure in which no cement was actually injected. Because the placebo procedure was similar to the vertebroplasty procedure except for the actual injection of cement, patients participating in the experiment were not aware of which treatment they received.
All patients were asked to rate their pain at three different times—3 days, 14 days, and 1 month after the procedure. Summary statistics are given in the accompanying table.
- a. Briefly explain why the researchers may have chosen to include a placebo group that underwent a fake, procedure rather than just comparing the vertebroplasty group to a group of patients who did not receive any treatment.
- b. Construct and interpret a 95% confidence interval for the difference in mean pain intensity 3 days after treatment for the vertebroplasty treatment and the fake treatment. (Hint: See Example 11.4.)
- c. Construct and interpret 95% confidence intervals for the difference in mean pain intensity at 14 days and at 1 month after treatment.
- d. Based on the confidence intervals from Parts (b) and (c), comment on the effectiveness of injecting cement as a way of reducing pain for those with fractured vertebrae.

- The article “Treadmill Exercise and Resistance Training in Patients With Peripheral Arterial Disease With and Without Intermittent Claudication. A Randomized Controlled Trial” (M. McDermott, P. Ades, et al., Journal of the American Medical Association, 2009:165–174) reported the results of a study to determine whether treadmill exercise could improve the walking ability of patients suffering from claudication, which is pain caused by insufficient blood flow to the muscles of the legs. A sample of 48 patients walked on a treadmill for six minutes every day. After six months, the mean distance walked in six minutes was 348 m, with a standard deviation of 80 m. For a control group of 46 patients who did not walk on a treadmill, the mean distance was 309 m with a standard deviation of 89 m. Find a 95% confidence interval for the difference in mean distance walked between the two groups of patients.arrow_forwardSleep apnea is a disorder in which there are pauses in breathing during sleep. Parvizi, et al., Mayo Clinic Proceedings, 2001:897–905) reported that in a sample of 427 people 65 and over, 104 of them had sleep apnea. a) Find a 95% confidence interval for the proportion of those 65 and over who have sleep apnea. b) Find a 99% confidence interval for the proportion of those 65 and over who have sleep apnea. c) Find the sample size needed for a 95% confidence interval to specify the proportion to within ±0.03. d) Find the sample size needed for a 99% confidence interval to specify the proportion to within ±0.03.arrow_forwardIs injecting medical cement effective in reducing pain for people who have suffered fractured vertebrae? - A case–control study of patients on antihypertensive drugs related an increased risk of myocardial infarction (MI) for patients using calcium channel blockers (Psaty, et al.,1995). In this study, cases were antihypertensive drug patients who had suffered a first fatal or nonfatal MI through 1993, and controls were antihypertensive patients, matched by demographic factors, who had not suffered a MI. Among the comparisons reported were patients receiving calcium channel (CC) blockers (with and without diuretics) and patients receiving β–blockers (with and without diuretics). Results of numbers of patient by drug/MI status combination are given in Table 1. Compute the odds ratio of suffering MI (CC blockers relative to β–blockers), and the corresponding 95% CI. Neutropenia is an abnormally low number of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell) in the blood. Chemotherapy often reduces the number of neutrophils to a level that makes patients susceptible to fever and infections. G. Bucaneve et al. published a study of such cancer patients in the paper “Levofloxacin to Prevent Bacterial Infection in Patients With Cancer and Neutropenia” (New England Journal of Medicine, Vol. 353, No. 10, pp. 977–987). For the study, 375 patients were randomly assigned to receive a daily dose of levofloxacin, and 363 were given placebo. In the group receiving levofloxacin, fever was present in 243 patients for the duration of neutropenia, whereas fever was experienced by 308 patients in the placebo group. a. At the 1% significance level, do the data provide sufficient evidence to conclude that levofloxacin is effective in reducing the occurrence of fever in such patients? b.
