Concept explainers
Transposable elements are known as stretches of DNA molecules and they can move from one place to another place. Transposable elements are inserted into the other DNA molecules (for example, chromosome, plasmid, or viral genome). They replicate along with the host DNA molecule because, they lack the origin of replication. The process of movement of the transposable elements is known as transposition. In bacteria, insertion sequences (IS) and transposons are two important types of transposable elements. Both insertion sequences (IS) and transposons contain genes encoding the transposase enzyme. IS and transposons carry short inverted terminal repeats at the ends of these elements. The transposase enzyme and terminal repeats are essential for transposition.

- Discuss how degeneracy of the genetic code makes cells more robust to mutations.arrow_forward5. a) Describe, using a diagram or point form notes, what is happening during transcription and translation of protein synthesis. Indicate where these events take place in the cell. b) An error occurs in the transcription of the original master strand of DNA. At the very first base pair, a guanine is substituted for cytosine. State the possible effects on the polypeptide and its functions.arrow_forward17arrow_forward
- Can transposons move from one cell to another?arrow_forward6. Given: 3"--TACTTCAAACCGGGCCCGATT--5 a) Give the sequence of nucleotides in the mRNA. b) What is the sequence of amino acids in the protein coded by the MRNA? c) If the first G is substituted by A, what is the sequence of amino acids in the protein? d) What type of mutation is illustrated by (e)?arrow_forwardExplain about formation of a pre-initiation complex (PIC) ?arrow_forward
- . The double-stranded circular DNA molecule thatforms the genome of the SV40 tumor virus can be denatured into single-stranded DNA molecules. Becausethe base composition of the two strands differs, thestrands can be separated on the basis of their densityinto two strands designated W(atson) and C(rick). When each of the purified preparations of the single strands was mixed with mRNA from cells infectedwith the virus, hybrids were formed between the RNAand DNA. Closer analysis of these hybridizationsshowed that RNAs that hybridized with the W preparation were different from RNAs that hybridized withthe C preparation. What does this tell you about thetranscription templates for the different classes ofRNAs?arrow_forward1.- Outline the general process of transcription (dna->rna) include a diagram a) include the basic enzymes involved and a description of their actions b) what is the product of transcription c)what will the cell do with the product d)where does the transcription take place in prokaryotic cellarrow_forward30. How can one identify the presence of introns in a hybrid of DNA and mRNA? Give an example of non-coding RNA and a regulatory DNA element.arrow_forward
