Chapter 11.3, Problem 16BSC
In Exercises 5-18, test the given claim.
16. Injuries and Motorcycle Helmet Color A case-control (or retrospective) study was conducted to investigate a relationship between the colors of helmets worn by motorcycle drivers and whether they are injured or killed in a crash. Results are given in the table below (based on data from “Motorcycle Rider Conspicuity and Crash Related Injury: Case-Control Study,” by Wells et al., BMJ USA, Vol. 4). Test the claim that injuries are independent of helmet color. Should motorcycle drivers choose helmets with a particular color? If so, which color appears best?
Color of Helmet | |||||
Black | White | Yellow/Orange | Red | Blue | |
Controls (not injured) | 491 | 377 | 31 | 170 | 55 |
Cases (injured or killed) | 213 | 112 | 8 | 70 | 26 |

The report Controlling Road Rage: A Literature Review and Pilot Study was prepared for the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety by D. Rathbone and J. Huckabee. The authors discussed the results of a literature review and pilot study on how to prevent aggressive driving and road rage. Road rage is defined as “... an incident in which an angry or impatient motorist or passenger intentionally injures or kills another motorist, passenger, or pedestrian, or attempts or threatens to injure or kill another motorist, passenger, or pedestrian.”
One aspect of the study was to investigate road rage as a function of the day of the week. The following table provides a frequency distribution for the days on which 69 road-rage incidents occurred.

In the book Business Research Methods (5th ed.), Donald R. Cooper and C. William Emory discuss studying the relationship between on-the-job accidents and smoking. Cooper and Emory describe the study as follows:
Suppose a manager implementing a smoke-free workplace policy is interested in whether smoking affects worker accidents. Since the company has complete reports of on-the-job accidents, she draws a sample of names of workers who were involved in accidents during the last year. A similar sample from among workers who had no reported accidents in the last year is drawn. She interviews members of both groups to determine if they are smokers or not.
The sample results are given in the following table.

- A large corporation is considering hiring a consultant to conduct a yearly in-house assertiveness training course for its incoming group of management trainees. Before signing a contract with the consultant, the corporation wishes to assess the effectiveness of the course. Ten trainees were randomly selected to participate in the course, and each was given tests designed to measure assertiveness before the course and after the course was completed. Higher scores on the test indicate higher levels of assertiveness. The test scores are shown in the table. Do the data provide significant evidence to conclude that the trainees are more assertive after taking the course? Use the data in the accompanying table to determine if there is evidence that there is an association between class standing and response to the body art question.
