Chapter 11.4, Problem 11.129P
During a rainstorm, the paths of the raindrops appear to form an angle of 30° with the vertical and to be directed to the left when observed from a side window of a train moving at a speed of 15 km/h. A short time later, after the speed of the train has increased to 24 km/h, the angle between the vertical and the paths of the drops appears to be 45°. If the train were stopped, at what angle and with what velocity would the drops be observed to fall?

A ball is suspended from a light 1.4 m string as shown. The string makes an angle of 28 degrees with the vertical. The ball is then kicked up and to the right such that the string remains taut the entire time the ball swings upwards. This kick gives the ball an initial velocity of 1.1 m/s. What will be the speed, in meters per second, of the ball when it reaches its lowest point (θ = 0)? What will be the maximum angle, in degrees, the string will make with the vertical?
A ball is drop from a building 30 m high. At the same instant, another ball is thrown upward with an initial velocity of 23 m/s. If the initial velocity of the first stone is 15 m/s, determine where and when the objects pass each other.
2. A ball is thrown with an upward velocity of 6.5 m/s from the top of a 12-m high building. One second later another ball is thrown vertically from the ground with a velocity of 12 m/s. Determine the height from the ground where the two balls pass each other.

Upon investigation it was found that after the crash the two cars got stuck and skidded off at an angle of 10° north of east. Each driver claimed that he was going at the speed limit of 50 km/h and that he tried to slow down but couldn’t avoid the crash because the other driver was going a lot faster. Knowing that the masses of cars A and B were 1500 kg and 1200 kg, respectively, determine (a) which car was going faster, (b) the speed of the faster of the two cars if the slower car was traveling at the speed limit.arrow_forwardCar A is at a gasoline station wants to overtake car B which is travelling at an average speed of 40 mph. Find also the time the train will take, if it be 30 m long, to pass a spectator standing at a point 150 m ahead of the train at the instant when the brake was applied.arrow_forwardCar A is traveling at 40 mi/h when it enters a 30 mi/h speed zone. The driver of car A decelerates at a rate of 16 ft/s2 until reaching a speed of 30 mi/h, which she then maintains. When car B , which was initially 60 ft behind car A and traveling at a constant speed of 45 mi/h, enters the speed zone, its driver decelerates at a rate of 20 ft/s2 until reaching a speed of 28 mi/h. Knowing that the driver of car B maintains a speed of 28 mi/h, determine (a) the closest that car B comes to car A, (b) the time at which car A is 70 ft in front of car B.arrow_forward
