Last name and acquisition timing. Refer to the Journal of Consumer Research (August 2011) study of the speed with which consumers decide to purchase a product, Exercise 8.131 (p. 442). Recall that the researchers theorized that consumers with last names that begin with letters later in the alphabet would tend to acquire items faster than those whose last names begin with letters earlier in the alphabet (i.e., the last name effect). Each in a sample of 50 MBA students was offered free tickets to an event for which there was a limited supply of tickets. The first letter of the last name of those who responded to an email offer in time to receive the tickets was noted and given a numerical value (e.g., “A” = 1, “B” = 2, etc.). Each student’s response time (measured in minutes) was also recorded.

b. The observed significance level for testing for a
c. Does this analysis support the researchers’ last name effect theory? Explain.

By how much could the largest time, currently 424, be increased without affecting the value of the sample median? By how much could this value be decreased without affecting the value of the sample median?d. - In a study reported in the July 2007 issue of the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, researchers investigated whether veterans are more likely to commit suicide than nonveterans. They spent 12 years following 104,000 veterans who had served in the armed forces between 1917 and 1994, and compared them with 216,000 nonveterans. They found that 197 veterans and 311 nonveterans committed suicide. Q: How many times more times is a veteran likely to commit suicide than a nonveteran? Round all values to 3 decimal places. In a typical study, a researcherobtains a sample of n = 16 participants and has eachperson take the herbal supplements every day for90 days. At the end of the 90 days, each person takesa standardized memory test. For the general population, scores from the test form a normal distributionwith a mean of μ = 50 and a standard deviation ofσ = 12. The sample of research participants had anaverage of M = 54.a. - Adding computerized medical images to a database promises to provide great resources for physicians. However, there are other methods of obtaining such information, so the issue of efficiency of access needs to be investigated. It was hypothesized that auditors would favor such proposed changes because their clients’ managers would receive higher compensation (salary, bonuses, and so on) when client earnings were reported to be higher.
