(a)
Summary Introduction
Interpretation: Optimal location is to be determined when the objective is to minimize the total rectilinear distance to the three existing facilities.
Concept Introduction:
Rectilinear distance refers to sum of distance between two facilities. Rectilinear distance can be defined by the following formula.

Locating Warehouses. Southeastern Foods has hired you to analyze their distribution-system design. The company has 11 distribution centers, with monthly volumes as listed below. Seven of these sites can support warehouses, in terms of the infrastructure available, and are designated by (W).
The monthly fixed cost for operating one of these warehouses is estimated at $3,600, although there is no capacity limit in their design. Southeastern could build warehouses at any of the designated locations, but its criterion is to minimize the total of fixed operating costs and variable shipment costs. The table below shows the cost per carton of shipping from any potential warehouse location to any distribution center.
Using the evolutionary solver, find the minimum monthly cost for Southeastern Foods.
I have two locations where I will be delivering goods. Vaalbara is located at coordinates (10,0) and I have 10 truckloads going to it. Kenorland is located at coordinates (20,20) and I have 40 truckloads going to it. What is the center of gravity's X coordinate? Round to the nearest whole number (e.g. 33.2 -> 33).

- XYZ Company is considering expanding its new plant. Its favorable sites for expansion are Greenwood, Indianola, and Greenville. The company must select one of these sites given the following information (1) The company is expecting to sell 3000 units per year. (2) Fixed costs per year at Greenwood, Indianola and Greenville are $50,000, $80,000, and $120,000; and variable costs are $60, $100, and $80 per unit respectively. (3) The expected selling price for each unit $150. Based on the expected profit of each location, which site will be selected for plant expansion?arrow_forwardConsider above problem. Suppose that the weight of facility 2 is 20. Applying the median method, it can be verified that the optimal location is (10, 10) - the centroid of department 2, where immovable structures exist. Under a new proposed distribution setting, the company wants to setup an intermediate holding facility, such that gasoline will first get transported to this holding facility, and then, from there, to the distributors. What will be the ideal location (coordinates) for the intermediate holding facility? (Round to 2 decimal places.)arrow_forward
- Sarah has a startup business that makes two distinct bird feeders that she has designed. Sarah is planning on operating a small factory to build the bird feeders. She is looking at two possible locations, A and B. If she chooses location A, the lease on the building will be higher than location B, thus leading to higher fixed costs than what she would have with location B. However, if she makes more than 20,000 units, both locations will likely have to be expanded, both the physical buildings and the manufacturing equipment. Variable costs to produce each unit will vary by location as well as by product. For example, the first design will have variable costs of $10 and $15 in locations A and B respectively, while the second bird feeder design will have variable costs of $20 and $25 respectively depending on location. However, she thinks that variable costs will decrease if she sells more than 5,000 units, as she will receive discounts from her suppliers at that point. She is unsure of…arrow_forwardProblem 14-10 A small manufacturing facility is being planned that will feed parts to three heavy manufacturing facilities. Management is looking for a place to locate a single distribution that will minimize total transportation costs. The plant is estimated to move (send) a total of shipment of 12,700 ton per month to the new distribution center. The transportation rate of moving shipment from the plant to the distribution center is $ 0.08 per ton per mile. Market A will receive a total shipment of 6,200 ton per month, market B will receive a total shipment of 2,000 ton per month, and market C will receive a total shipment of 4,500 ton per month. The transportation rate between the distribution center and the markets are as follows: $0.19 per ton per mile to market A, $0.37 per ton per mile to market B, and $0.25 per ton per mile to market C. The horizontal and vertical coordinates of the plants and markets are follows: Plant, 25, 75 Market A, 30, 5 Market B, 36, 24 Market C, 15, 40 Use the Center-of-Gravity method to find…arrow_forward
