Concept introduction:
The sol-gel method is a process that is used to produce metal oxide powder from metal alkoxide. Alkoxide is alkyl derivative molecule of alcohol. In the sol-gel method, metal alkoxide dissolves in suitable organic solvent and then reacts with water to introduce hydrolysis reaction. In hydrolysis reaction, the metal-alkoxide bonds
After formation of sol, the water molecules from sol molecule get eliminated to form bridge bonding and form a gel-like material. The excess water then removed from heating and convert gel into fine powder.

- Using data in Appendix 1, estimate the temperature at which Fe2O3 can be reduced to iron, using hydrogen gas as a reducing agent (assume H2O(g) is the other product).arrow_forwardIn determining the manganese dioxide content of a pyrolusite mineral. A sample of 0.5261 g of pyrolusite was treated with 0.7149 g of 97.98% sodium oxalate in an acid medium. After the reaction was complete, 30.47 mL of a 0.02160 M potassium permanganate solution was required to titrate for excess unreacted oxalic acid. Calculate the percentage of manganese dioxide in the pyrolusite.arrow_forwardOne day in lab, while taking apart a complicated distillation apparatus, your friend Maya (an expert chemist) says this: "Metal sulfides roasted with oxygen produce the corresponding oxide and sulfur dioxide gas." Using Maya's statement, and what you already know about chemistry, predict the products of the following reaction. Be sure your chemical equation is balanced! ZnS(s) +O2(g) ->arrow_forward
- Write balanced equations for the following reactions. (a) Old oil paintings can be cleaned by the reaction of hydrogen peroxide with lead (II) sulfide. H2O2 + PbS → _________ + _________ (b) Statues, monuments, and historical sites which are made of limestone or marble are slowly deteriorating. Marble or CaC, which slowly reacts with sulfuric acid from air pollution to form a salt, is washed away. The sulfuric acid is formed from the air pollutant sulfur trioxide and water. (c) Nitrogen trifluoride decomposes into its constituent elements.arrow_forwardWhy do Selenium and tellurium occur in rare minerals?arrow_forwardWhat is the oxidation number of titanium in TiO2?arrow_forward
- What is the colour of FeSO4.7H2O crystals? How does this colour change upon heating? Give balanced chemical equation for the changes.arrow_forward(i) Name the method of refining of metals such as Germanium.(ii) In the extraction of Al, impure Al2O3 is dissolved in cone. NaOH to form sodium aluminate and leaving impurities behind. What is the name of this process?(iii) What is the role of coke in the extraction of iron from its oxides?arrow_forwardThe key reaction (unbalanced) in the manufacture of syn-thetic cryolite for aluminum electrolysis is HF(g)+ Al(OH)₃(s) +NaOH(aq) →Na₃AlF₆(aq) +H₂O(l) Assuming a 95.6% yield of dried, crystallized product, whatmass (in kg) of cryolite can be obtained from the reaction of 365 kg of Al(OH)₃, 1.20 m3of 50.0% by mass aqueous NaOH (d=1.53 g/mL), and 265 m³ of gaseous HF at 305 kPa and 91.5°C? (Assume that the ideal gas law holds.)arrow_forward
- What chemical process is used for obtaining a metal from its oxide?arrow_forwardA slag sample is known to contain all of its iron in the forms of FeO and Fe2O3. A sample of 1,000 g of the slag was dissolved in hydrochloric acid according to the usual method, then reduced with stannous chloride and finally titrated with a 0.02237 M solution of potassium permanganate, of which 28.59 mL were used. A second aliquot of the slag sample, weighing 1,500, was dissolved in a nitrogen atmosphere to further adjust the oxidation state of the iron, it was immediately titrated with the same potassium permanganate solution. If this second experiment required 15.60 mL of permanganate solution, calculate: a) The percentage of total iron in the slag. b) The percentages of the oxide FeO and Fe2O3arrow_forwardHow do you find the oxidation numbers of Cr and P in the formula unit Cr(PO4)2?arrow_forward
