Chapter 12, Problem 12.3PP

In the branched pipe system shown in Fig. 12.8 850   L / m i n of water at 10 ° C is flowing in a DN 100 Schedule 40 pipe at A. The flow splits into two DN 50 Schedule 40 pipes as shown and then rejoins at B. Calculate (a) the flow rate in each of the branches and (b) the pressure difference p A   p B . Include the effect of the minor losses in the lower branch of the system. The total length of pipe in the lower branch is 60 m. The elbows are standard.

Question 8 Two reservoirs are connected by a pipe whose total length is 360m.From the upper reservoir the pipe is 300mm in diameterfor a length of 150m and the remaining 210m is 450mm in diameter. The difference in water levels between the two reservoirs are 8m.Take f=0.006 for the smaller pipe and f=0.005 for the larger pipe.If all the changes in pipe sections are sharp and sudden, calculate the flow rate which can be delivered.
Water at 60°F is pumped from a reservoir to the top of a mountain through a 6-in. Schedule 120 pipe at an average velocity of 12 ft/s. The pipe discharges into the atmosphere at a level 3,000 ft above the level in the reservoir. The pipeline itself is 4,500 ft long. If the overall efficiency of the pump and the motor driving it is 70 percent and the cost of electric energy to the motor is 4 cents per kilowatt hour, what is the hourly energy cost for pumping this water?
Benzene flows through a 100 mm diameter pipe at a mean velocity of 3 m/s. Find discharge in liter per second.
