Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The stepwise mechanism for reduction of epoxide A to alcohol B using LiAlH4 is to be drawn. The product formed if LiAlD4 was used as reagent is to be predicted. The stereochemistry of all the stereogenic centers is to be indicated.

Concept introduction: The metal hydride reagents are good reducing agents such as LiAlH4. They can be used to reduce carbonyl compounds, conjugated double or triple bonds and CX bond in alkyl halides and epoxides. The epoxide rings open up to form alcohol.
