The skeleton of the thumb consists of the first metacarpal bone that articulates proximally with the wrist at the carpometacarpal joint and distally with the proximal phalanx at the metacarpo-phalangeal joint. This latter bone articulates with the distal phalanx at the hinge joint. Additionally, at the metacarpophalangeal joint, there are two sesamoid bones.
