Chapter 12, Problem 1RQ
To determine

An advantage of state space techniques over root locus techniques while placing the closed-loop poles for transient response design.

Expert Solution & Answer

Explanation of Solution

The major drawback in frequency domain designing method using root locus technique is that even after designing the location of dominant second-order poles it is not sure whether the higher poles will affect the second order approximation or not. Since root locus does not allow the parameters to place all the closed-loop poles uniquely, so all poles in the system cannot be specified for a higher order than 2. Total n adjustable parameters are required, to place n unknown quantities. In case of root locus, either there is one gain to adjust or compensator pole-zero pair to select, which does not add up to number of parameters for placing closed loop poles at their desired locations.

State space techniques introduce into the system to overcome all these drawbacks. These includes other adjustable parameters as well as the technique used to find these parameters. Thus, allowing to place all poles (both dominant and non-dominant) of a closed-loop system.
