Concept explainers
You are headwaiter at a new restaurant, and your boss asks you to hang a sign for her. You’re to hang the sign, whose mass is 66 kg, in the configuration shown in Fig. 12.24. A uniform horizontal rod of mass 8.2 kg and length 2.3 m holds the sign. At one end the rod is attached to the wall by a pivot: at the other end it’s supported by a cable that can withstand a maximum tension of 800 N. You’re to determine the minimum height h above the pivot for anchoring the cable to the wall.

An Introduction to Thermal Physics
- One end of a uniform rod of weight w = 73.5 N and length L = 2.55 m is supported by a cable at an angle of ? = 37.0°above the rod. The other end rests on a small frictionless support and presses into a wall as shown in the figure. Determine the magnitude n of the vertical normal force exerted by the support on the rod and find the magnitude T of the tension in the cable.arrow_forwardA uniform drawbridge must be held at a 38.5 ∘∘ angle above the horizontal to allow ships to pass underneath. The drawbridge weighs 48000 NN, is 19.0 mm long, and pivots about a hinge at its lower end. A cable is connected 3.70 mm from the hinge, as measured along the bridge, and pulls horizontally on the bridge to hold it in place. C: Find the direction of the force the hinge exerts on the bridge. D: If the cable suddenly breaks, what is the initial angular acceleration of the bridge?arrow_forwardTwo ladders, 4.00 m and 3.00 m long, are hinged at point A and tied together by a horizontal rope 0.90 m above the floor. The ladders weigh 480 N and 360 N, respectively, and the center of gravity of each is at its center. Assume that the floor is freshly waxed and frictionless. (a) Find the upward force at the bottom of each ladder. (b) Find the tension in the rope. (c) Find the magnitude of the force one ladder exerts on the other at point A. (d) If an 800-N painter stands at point A, find the tension in the horizontal rope.arrow_forward
- The system in the figure is in equilibrium. A concrete block of mass 313 kg hangs from the end of the uniform strut of mass 45.0 kg. For angles φ = 23.7° and θ = 66.6°, find (a) the tension T in the cable and the (b) horizontal and (c) vertical components of the force on the strut from the hinge.arrow_forwarda uniform rod of mass m is hinged to a building at its lower end, while its upper end is held in place by a rope attached to the wall. If angle u1 = 60°, what value must angle u2 have so that the tension in the rope is equal to mg/2?arrow_forwardTwo men are carrying a ladder of length l by supporting it at its ends. The ladder is horizontal, and its center of gravity is 1/4 of the way from one end. At what distance x from this end must a can of paint, of mass 3/4 of that of the ladder, be suspended so that the men carry equal loads?arrow_forward
- Consider two steel rods, A and B. B has three times the area and twice the length of A, so Young's modulus for B will be what factor times Young's modulus for A?arrow_forwardA uniform horizontal board of mass 34 kg and length 4.7 m is supported at each end by vertical posts. A 62 kg man stands on the board 1.3 m from the left end. What are the forces applied to the board by the posts?arrow_forwardA sign of uniform density weighing 415 N is supported by a rigid horizontal pipe of negligible mass and a cable that makes a 50.0° angle with the wall. What is the tension needed for the cable to support the sign?arrow_forward
- The system in the Figure is in equilibrium. A mass M1 = 203.0 kg hangs from the end of a uniform strut which is held at an angle theta = 47.0o with respect to the horizontal. The cable supporting the strut is at angle alpha = 30.0o with respect to the horizontal. The strut has a mass of 59.4 kg. Find the magnitude of the tension T in the cable. Find the magnitude of the horizontal component of the force exerted on the strut by the hinge? Find the magnitude of the vertical component of the force exerted on the strut by the hinge?arrow_forwardHow much compressive stress is present on the L1, L2 vertebral disc of a 625 N woman, given that approximately 45% of body weight is supported by the disc when she stands erect holding a 222 N suitcase? (Assume that the disc is oriented horizontally and that its surface area is 20 cm2.)arrow_forwardTrue or False: A cylindrical rod with a cross sectional area of 0.1 m^2 which is subjected to a tensile force of 20N at each end would experience a tensile stress of 200 Pa?arrow_forward
