What five-carbon alkene forms the same product whether it reacts with HBr in the presence of a peroxide or with HBr in the absence of a peroxide?
1. You have an alkyl halide and the product has a thiol group without an alkyl, what is the reagant?   2. What is the reaction of disodium sulfide and Na2S, what is its product?   3. You have a thiol compound that reacts with sodium hydroxide, what do you get?   4. You have an oxyrane reacting with sulfuirc acid and methanol, what do you get? 5. Have an alkene reacting with Br, what do you get?
Draw eugenol as a line structure. The double bonds of the benzene ring are fairly unreactive unless you use special catalysts. But the double bond on the side group is reactive. Draw the mechanism of eugenol reacting with HBr to form the two possible carbocation intermediates. Put your intermediates into square brackets. Label each carbocation as a methyl carbon or 1°, 2°, or 3°. Then circle a more stable carbocation if one is more stable. Can you guess what the final product is?
