Chapter 12, Problem 60P
A man riding upward in a freight elevator accidentally drops a package off the elevator when it is 100 ft from the ground. If the elevator maintains a constant upward speed of 4 ft/s, determine how high the elevator is from the ground the instant the package hits the ground. Draw the v-t curve for the package during the time it is in motion. Assume that the package was released with the same upward speed as the elevator.

A trebuchet uses a falling counterweight to launch a projectile. It can be thought of as a machine that
converts the gravitational potential energy of the counterweight into kinetic and gravitational potential
energy of the projectile. The counterweight has a mass of 100kg and drops 3m. The projectile has a mass
of 3kg, and starts on the ground. When it leaves the sling, it has a height of 4m speed of 30.

If the average power used in lifting the counterweight is 48W, find the time it takes to lift it from the
ground to its full height.

A motorboat and its load weigh 980 kg. Assume that the propeller force is constant and equal to 24 kg, and the water resistance is numerically equal to 1.5v kg, where v is the speed at any instant time in m/sec. If the boat starts from rest, determine its speed at the end of 10 seconds.
