Estimates of Heights There is a relatively simple way to make a reasonable estimate of a vertical height.
Step 1 Hold a 1-ft ruler vertically at arm’s length and approach the object to be measured.
Step 2 Stop when one end of the ruler lines up with the top of the object and the other end with its base.
Step 3 Now pace off the distance to the object, taking normal strides. The number of paces will be the approximate height of the object in feet.

- TEST YOUR UNDERSTANDING | FOR EXAMPLE 5.12 Find a formula for the roof line in the example if the center height is 8feet above the outside wall rather than 4feet. EXAMPLE 5.12ROOF LINES The outside wall of a house is 10feet high. From the western wall, the roof rises 4feet over a horizontal span of 16feet and then descends at the same rate another horizontal span of 16feet to the eastern wall see Figure 5.55arrow_forwardWheelchair ramp. A 1-inch rise for a 16-inch run makes it easier for the wheelchair rider to ascend a ramp. (a) How long must a ramp be to easily accommodate a 24-inch rise to the door? (b) Create a model of this ramp.arrow_forwardConstruction Costs The town of Foxton lies 10 mi north of an abandoned east-west road that runs through Grimley, as shown in the figure. The point on the abandoned road closed to Foxton is 40 mi from Grimley. Country officials are about to build a new road connecting the two towns. They have determined that restoring the old road would cost 100,000 per mile, while building a new road would cost 200, 000 per mile. How much of the abandoned road should be used as indicated in the figure if the officials intend to spend exactly 6.8 million? Would it cost less than this amount to build a new road connecting the towns directly?arrow_forward
- Falling-Body Problems Suppose an object t dropped from a height h0 above the ground. Then its height after t seconds is given by h=16t2+h0 , where h ¡s measured in feet. Use this information Lo solve the problem. If a ball is dropped from 288 ft above the ground, how bug does it take to reach ground level?arrow_forwardSurveying A surveyor in a helicopter is determining the width of an island, as shown in the figure. (a) What is the shortest distance d the helicopter must travel to land on the island? (b) What is the horizontal distance x the helicopter must travel before it is directly over the nearer end of the island? (c) Find the width w of the island. Explain how you found your answer.arrow_forwardCost The cost of constructing a wooden box with a square base varies jointly as the height of the box and the square of the width of the box. Constructing a box of height 16 inches and of width 6 inches costs $28.80. How much does it cost to construct a box of height 14 inches and of width 8 inches?arrow_forward
