Concept explainers
A makeshift swing is constructed by makings loop in one end of a rope and tying the other end to a tree limb. A child is silting in the loop with the rope hanging vertically when the child's father pulls on the child with a horizontal force and displaces the child to one side. Just before the child is released from rest, the rope makes an angle of 15° with the vertieal and the tension in the rope is 280 N. (a) How much does the child weigh? (b) What is the magnitude of the (horizontal) force of the father on the child just before the child is released? (c) If the maximum horizontal force the father can exert on the child is 93 N, what is the maximum angle with the vertical the rope can make while the father is palling horizontally?

- a 50.0 kg uniform square sign, of edge length L=2.00m, is hung from a horizontal rod of length dh = 3.00 m and negligible mass. A cable is attached to the end of the rod and to a point on the wall at distance dv = 4.00 m above the point where the rod is hinged to the wall. (a) What is the tension in the cable? What are the (b) magnitude and (c) direction (left or right) of the horizontal component of the force on the rod from the wall, and the (d) magnitude and (e) direction (up or down) of the vertical component of this force?arrow_forwardSuppose three forces with magnitudes of 198 N, 275 N, and 205 N are placed in equilibrium. If the 205-N force acts in the +y-direction, what is one of the two configurations in the xy-plane that the remaining forces may have? Give numerical values for the angles.arrow_forwardA fisherman has caught a fish on his pole, and to keep the pole steady he has to apply an upward force of F2 = 265 N at an angle of 58° with respect to the pole (see figure). The length of his pole is 3.2 m, and he is holding it a distance 0.65 m from the end, where he is applying a downward force F1. Part (a) With how much force, F1, in newtons, does he have to push straight downward on the end of his pole to keep the pole from moving? You may assume the pole is massless. Part (b) What is the mass of the fish on the end of the pole, in kilograms?arrow_forward
- A uniform plank of length 2.00 m and mass 30.0 kg is supported by three ropes, as indicated by the blue vectors. Find the tension in each rope when a 700 N person is d = 0.500 m from the left endarrow_forwardA uniform horizontal beam 5.00 m long and weighting 3.03 102 N is attached to a wall by a pin connection that allows the beam to rotate. Its far end is supported by a cable that makes an angle of 53.0° with the horizontal (Figure (a)). If a person weighing 6.05 102 N stands 1.60 m from the wall, find the magnitude of the tension in the cable and the force exerted by the wall on the beam. T = N Rx = N Ry = N Even if we selected some other axis for the torque equation, the solution would be the same. For example, if the axis were to pass through the center of gravity of the beam, the torque equation would involve both T and Ry. Together with Equations (1) and (2), however, the unknowns could still be found—a good exercise. In this example, notice the steps of the Problem-Solving Strategy could be carried out in the explicit recommended order.QUESTION What happens to the tension in the cable if the man in Figure (a) moves farther away from the wall? The tension would…arrow_forwardA person is standing on a section of uniform scaffolding as shown in the figure. The section of scaffolding is L = 1.50 m in length, has a ms = 24.5 kg mass and is supported by three ropes as shown. - The upper end of a wide-skid W 8 × 21 steel column (E = 30 × 103 ksi) is supported laterally between two tubes (see figure). The tubes are not attached to the column and the friction between the tubes and the column is not reliable. The base of the column provides fixed support and the column is 13 ft long. Determine the critical load for the column, consider the Euler buckling in the web plane and also perpendicular to the web plane.arrow_forwardA horizontal L=1.0 m long mb=12 kg uniform bar is hinged on the left end and pulled at the right end by a cable. The cable makes 24° angle with horizontal. A 20 kg store sign is suspended below the bar at d=0.18 m from the right end. Find the magnitude of horizontal hinge force.arrow_forwardAn elastic rope is stretched between the tops of two identical posts. A man is to walk along the elastic rope. When the man is at the middle of the elastic rope, the tension in the elastic rope is 2220 N. Each half of the elastic rope makes an angle of 8.00with respect to the horizontal. Find the weight of the man.arrow_forward
- a bar of length L is 3m and weight w is 131.7N it is supported at one end by a bolt in a wall and at its other end it is supported horizontally by a cable that forms a 30 degree angle with the bar. A weight of w = 389.9N is placed at x = 1.2m from the wall. What is the cable tension?arrow_forwardA ladder of uniform density and mass m rests against a frictionless vertical wall, making an angle of 60.0° with the horizontal...arrow_forwardThe system shown is in equilibrium. A mass of 122 kg hangs from the end of a strut, which is connected by a hinge to the ground and makes an angle of θ = 50.0 degrees with the ground. The strut has a mass of 48.4 kg and is uniform. a) Find the tension in the cable holding up the strut, which makes an angle of ϕ = 30.0 degrees with the ground and attaches at a point 1/3 L from the top of the strut. b) Find the horizontal and vertical forces exerted on the strut by the hinge.arrow_forward
