Concept explainers
Interpretation:
Whether effusion or diffusion is responsible for the smell of perfume from an open bottle that is located across the room must be explained.
Concept introduction:
Diffusion and effusion are processes due to which gases spread.
Answer to Problem 95A
Diffusion process is responsible for the smell of perfume from an open bottle kept across a room.
Explanation of Solution
As the bottle is opened so gas molecules can spread very fast unlike effusion in which gas molecules spread through slowly which is lesser than mean free path of the molecule.
So in case of effusion only a molecule can pass at a time. Thus smell of perfume can’t spread as fast as the case of diffusion.
Diffusion process is responsible for the smell of the perfume from an open bottle.
