Summary Introduction

To determine:

The reason that why a biologist thinks that pathogen Pneumocystis jirovecii has been reclassifies as a fungus.

Introduction:

Fungi are eukaryotic and multicellular organisms. They contain cell nucleus comprised of genetic material which is surrounded by different membranes. Fungi are different from plant and animals. Fungi depend on other organisms for food consumption while plant makes their own food. Fungi are also different to animals, as animals lack cell wall while fungi contain cell wall. Fungi show both asexual and sexual mode of replication.

Twenty years ago, Pneumocystis jirovecii, a pathogen of immunocompromised patients that causes pneumonia, was classified as a protozoan because it is a chemoheterotroph that lacks a cell wall. However, taxonomists today classify Pneumocystitis as a fungus. Why do you think it was originally misclassified?
Chytrids, a group of fungi with flagellated spores, include somebasal lineages
While working in a plant disease diagnostic lab, you receive a sample of a very dead tomato plant.  The plant has rotted roots and the symptoms match known fungal and oomycete diseases of tomatoes.  Explain one difference between true fungi and oomycetes that you could observe to determine what type of organism is killing the tomatoes?
