Concept explainers
A Cereal-Marketing Survey A food distribution company conducted a survey to determine whether a proposed premium to be included in boxes of its cereal was appealing enough to generate new sales. Four cities were used as test markets, where the cereal was distributed with the premium, and four cities as control markets, where the cereal was distributed without the premium. The eight cities were chosen on the basis of their similarity in terms of population, per capita income, and total cereal purchase volume. The results are shown in the following table.
Percent Change in Average Market Share per Month | ||
1 | + 18 | |
Test cities | 2 | + 15 |
3 | +7 | |
4 | + 10 | |
1 | + 1 | |
2 | -8 | |
Control cities | 3 | -5 |
4 | 0 |

- The director of library services at a college did a survey of types of books (by subject) in the circulation library. Then she used library records to take a random sample of 888 books checked out last term and classified the books in the sample by subject. The results are shown below. Subject Area Percent of Books on Subject in CirculationLibrary on This Subject Number of Books inSample on This Subject Business 32% 299 Humanities 25% 208 Natural Science 20% 216 Social Science 15% 100 All other subjects 8% 65 Using a 5% level of significance, test the claim that the subject distribution of books in the library fits the distribution of books checked out by students. (a) What is the level of significance?State the null and alternate hypotheses. The provincial veterinarian determined that, in a certain municipality, 60% of dog owners have only one dog, 28% have two dogs, and 12% have three or more. When he conducted the survey, the following are the data: Out of 143 dog owners, 84 had one dog and 42 had two dogs. At 5%level of significance, determine whether the data collected supports the claim of the municipal veterinarian. (prepare a table showing the observed and expected frequencies). The following are the results of the survey among two groups of respondents on their perceptions regarding the adequacy of government’s program support during the pandemic. Test, at 5%, that there is a significant difference in the responses of the two groups. - A school psychologist wants to test the effectiveness of a new method of teaching art. She recnuits 700 sixth-grade students and randomly divides them into two groups. Group 1 is taught by means of the new method, while grouD 2 is taught by traditional methods. The same teacher is assigned to teach both groups. At the end of the year, an achievement test is administered and the results of the two groups are compared. Complete parts (a) through (h) below. (a) What is the response variable in this experiment? O A. The score of group 2 on the achievement test O B. The scores on the achievement tests of both group 1 and group 2 O C. The score of group 1 on the achievement test O D. The students' ability in art (b) Is the response variable qualitative or quantitative? O A. The response variable is qualitative because it is a characteristic. O B. The response variable is quantitative because it is a measurement. O C. The response variable is quantitative because it is a characteristic.
