Chapter 12.5, Problem 1CSR
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The operation of natural selection on inheritance of defective myostatin alleles, if whippets were wild dogs that chased down their prey.

Introduction:

Homozygous whippets with defective bully genes (mutated myostatin) contains lots of muscles and suffer from muscle cramp in thigh and shoulder and thus, cannot run fast, whereas whippets with homozygous normal bully gene are skinny and can run fast. Whippets with heterozygous bully allele contain intermediate muscle and are able to run faster than whippets with homozygous normal bully allele.

Why the process of DNA is transcribed into mRNA and then translated into protein is referred to as the “central dogma” of biology? Give one scenario that would explain how a mutation in the DNA of the Piedmontese bull could lead to muscle hypertrophy.  If more cows had the same musculature as the Piedmontese bull, how would that affect meat production in countries that use cows as a primary meat source?
Protein-X has a calcium (Ca²+)-binding regulatory subunit. Upon calcium (Ca²+) binding the protein changes its own conformation resulting in the conformation change of protein-Y. As a result of this calcium (Ca²+)-dependent protein-X mediated conformational change protein-Y exposes the myosin II head binding sites on the skeletal muscle actin filaments. Identify the protein-X and protein-Y from the following choices. O Protein-X: Troponin; Protein-Y: Tropomysosin O Protein-X: Tropomodulin; CapZ O Protein-X: Nebulin; Protein-Y: Titin Protein-X: Tropomysosin; Protein-Y: Tropomodulin
Mutation in the fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) gene results in achondroplasia (dwarfism), which is a dominant condition caused by a single base substitution (GGG>AGG) that changes the amino acid glycine at position 480 to arginine (G480R) in the FGFR protein. Normally, FGFR is active when FGF binds to it and inhibits excessive bone growth, but the mutant FGFR is constantly active even when FGF is not bound to it. o How can you create a mouse model for achondroplasia? Select all that apply. OPronuclear injection of a mutant copy (G48OR) of the gene to a mouse zygote V CRISPR that knocks in a mutant copy (G480R) of the gene to a mouse genome O CRISPR that knocks out the wild-type gene in a mouse genome O RNAI that knocks down the wild-type gene expression in a mouse genome O FGFR gene inactivated by a marker gene is introduced to embryonic stem cells
