Chapter 13, Problem 10TYPSS

PROCESS OF SCIENCE A species of rotifer, a small freshwater invertebrate, abandoned sexual reproduction millions of years ago. A remarkable feature of the rotifer's life cycle is its ability to withstand extreme drying. When the rotifer's watery environment dries out, so does the rotifer, and it can be blown in the wind to a new environment. Rotifers that are blown to water will rehydrate and resume an active life. A major pathogen of these rotifers is a species of fungus. Some scientists hypothesize that fungus infected rotifers rid themselves of the pathogen when they dry.

a. Design an experimental study to test this hypothesis.

b. Why might the ability to withstand extreme drying reduce any potential advantage of sexual reproduction in this rotifer species?

Some slime molds violate the first element of cell theory because?     they have no nuclei in their cells.     they do not arise from pre-existing slime molds.     their cells have still smaller cells living within their cytoplasms.     the entire slime mold appears to lack separate cells in its structure.     they do not reproduce sexually.
The organism represented below is multicellular, heterotrophic, and completely aquatic. - Offspring resulting from only the process of mitotic cell division Which other characteristics could be used to descri this organism? A) reproduces in a water habitat and is a producer B) carries out photosynthesis and needs oxygen C) deposits cellular wastes on land and decompos dead organisms D) reproduces asexually and is a consumer
I have a pet amoeba. It's name is Stretch. I look at stretch every day with my microscope, feed it, play with it, etc., like any good pet owner would. But one day, I notice that Stretch is really stretching out! And a few minutes later, Stretch has turned into two. Amoebas reproduce through mitosis, where they replicate all of their internal biology, then split themselves into two, each new cell carrying everything it needs to survive. Which one is Stretch? Both? How can that be, since things are only identical to themselves? We wouldn't call identical twins the same person, even though they are very similar to one another. Are neither Stretch? One but not the other? How would we determine that? Explain whatever it is that you think is true, and back it up with some reasoning. Be sure your response is at least 300 words. Like usual, find a classmate that you
