Concept explainers
To fill:
The correct term in the given blank.
Introduction:
Researchers use genetic engineering to manipulate DNA.
Answer to Problem 11A
Biologists use DNA ligase to join two DNA molecules together.
Explanation of Solution
An enzyme normally used by cells for DNA repair and replication is DNA ligase. It can join two DNA fragments chemically. Ligase joins DNA fragments that have both sticky ends as well as those that have blunt ends.
Recombinant DNA can be made by connecting fragments of DNA from different sources. DNA ligase is used to join a plasmid DNA and a DNA fragment obtained from another genome to create a recombinant plasmid DNA.
