Chapter 13, Problem 13.31P
Cost-plus and market-based pricing. Georgia Temps, a large labor contractor, supplies contract labor to building-construction companies. For 2017, Georgia Temps has budgeted to supply 84,000 hours of contract labor. Its variable costs are $13 per hour, and its fixed costs are $168,000. Roger Mason, the general manager, has proposed a cost-plus approach for pricing labor at full cost plus 20%.
- 1. Calculate the price per hour that Georgia Temps should charge based on Mason’s proposal.
- 2. The marketing manager supplies the following information on demand levels at different prices:
Price per Hour | Demand (Hours) |
$16 | 124,000 |
17 | 104,000 |
18 | 84,000 |
19 | 74,000 |
20 | 61,000 |
Georgia Temps can meet any of these demand levels. Fixed costs will remain unchanged for all the demand levels. On the basis of this additional information, calculate the price per hour that Georgia Temps should charge to maximize operating income.
- 3. Comment on your answers to requirements 1 and 2. Why are they the same or different?

- Variable Cost Ratio, Contribution Margin Ratio Chillmax Company plans to sell 3,500 pairs of shoes at 60 each in the coming year. Unit variable cost is 21 (includes direct materials, direct labor, variable factory overhead, and variable selling expense). Fixed factory overhead is 30,000 and fixed selling and administrative expense is 48,000. Required: 1. Calculate the variable cost ratio. 2. Calculate the contribution margin ratio. 3. Prepare a contribution margin income statement based on the budgeted figures for next year. In a column next to the income statement, show the percentages based on sales for sales, total variable cost, and total contribution margin.arrow_forwardBobcat uses a traditional cost system and estimates next years overhead will be $800.000, as driven by the estimated 25,000 direct labor hours. - Wellington, Inc., reports the following contribution margin income statement for the month of May. The company has the opportunity to purchase new machinery that will reduce its variable cost per unit by $10 but will increase fixed costs by 20%. Assume sales level remains unchanged.arrow_forwardBolger and Co. manufactures large gaskets for the turbine industry. Bolgers per-unit sales price and variable costs for the current year are as follows: Bolgers total fixed costs aggregate to 360,000. Bolgers labor agreement is expiring at the end of the year, and management is concerned about the effects of a new labor agreement on its break-even point in units. The controller performed a sensitivity analysis to ascertain the estimated effect of a 10-per-unit direct labor increase and a 10,000 reduction in fixed costs. Based on these data, the break-even point would: a. decrease by 1,000 units. b. decrease by 125 units. c. increase by 375 units. d. increase by 500 units.arrow_forwardMarkham Farms reports the following contribution margin income statement for the month of August. - Hatch Manufacturing produces multiple machine parts. The theoretical cycle time for one of its products is 65 minutes per unit. The budgeted conversion costs for the manufacturing cell dedicated to the product are 12,960,000 per year. The total labor minutes available are 1,440,000. During the year, the cell was able to produce 0.6 units of the product per hour. Suppose also that production incentives exist to minimize unit product costs. Required: 1. Compute the theoretical conversion cost per unit. 2. Compute the applied conversion cost per minute (the amount of conversion cost actually assigned to the product). 3. Discuss how this approach to assigning conversion cost can improve delivery time performance. Explain how conversion cost acts as a performance driver for on-time deliveries.arrow_forwardDimitri Designs has capacity to produce 30,000 desk chairs per year and is currently selling all 30,000 for $240 each. Country Enterprises has approached Dimitri to buy 800 chairs for $210 each. Dimitris normal variable cost is $165 per chair, including $50 per unit in direct labor per chair. Dimitri can produce the special order on an overtime shift, which means that direct labor would be paid overtime at 150% of the normal pay rate. The annual fixed costs will be unaffected by the special order and the contract will not disrupt any of Dimitris other operations. What will be the impact on profits of accepting the order?arrow_forwardRemarkable Enterprises requires four units of part A for every unit of Al that it produces. Currently, part A is made by Remarkable, with these per-unit costs in a month when 4,000 units were produced: Variable manufacturing overhead is applied at $1.60 per unit. The other $0.50 of overhead consists of allocated fixed costs. Remarkable will need 8,000 units of part A for the next years production. Altoona Corporation has offered to supply 8,000 units of part A at a price of $8.00 per unit. If Remarkable accepts the offer, all of the variable costs and $2,000 of the fixed costs will be avoided. Should Remarkable accept the offer from Altoona Corporation?arrow_forward
- The firm uses the absorption costing approach to cost-plus pricing described in the text to set prices for its products. Based on budgeted sales of 45,000 units next year, the unit product cost of a particular product is ₱15.60. The company's selling, general, and administrative expenses for this product are budgeted to be ₱1,035,000 in total for the year. The company has invested ₱280,000 in this product and expects a return on investment of 11%. The selling price for this product based on the absorption costing approach described would be closest to: a. ₱39.28 b. ₱17.32 c. ₱97.20 d. ₱38.60arrow_forwardABC, Inc., uses the absorption costing approach to cost-plus pricing described in the text to set prices for its products. Gonzales uses cost-plus pricing methods to set its target selling price. Because some managers prefer absorption-cost pricing and others prefer variable-cost pricing, the accounting department provides information under both approaches using a markup of 50% on absorption cost and a markup of 70% on variable cost.…arrow_forward
