Concept explainers
CP Your starship, the Aimless Wanderer, lands on the mysterious planet Mongo. As chief scientist-engineer, you make the following measurements: A 2.50-kg stone thrown upward from the ground at 12.0 m/s returns to the ground in 4.80 s; the circumference of Mongo at the equator is 2.00 × 105 km; and there is no appreciable atmosphere on Mongo. The starship commander, Captain Confusion, asks for the following information: (a) What is the mass of Mongo? (b) If the Aimless Wanderer goes into a circular orbit 30,000 km above the surface of Mongo, how many hours will it take the ship to complete one orbit?

- Scurrilous con artists have been known to represent gold-plated tungsten ingots as pure gold and sell them to the greedy at prices much below gold value but deservedly far above the cost of tungsten. With what accuracy must you be able to measure the mass of such an ingot in and out of water to tell that it is almost pure tungsten rather than pure gold?arrow_forwardA spherical vessel used for deep-sea exploration has a radius of 1.50 m and a mass of 1.20 104 kg. To dive, the vessel takes oil mass in the form of seawater. Determine the mass the vessel must take on if it is to descend at a constant speed of 1.20 m/s, when the resistive force on it is 1 100 N in the upward direction. The density of seawater is equal to 1.03 103 kg/m3.arrow_forwardYou are preparing some apparatus for a visit to a newly discovered planet Caasi having oceans of glycerine and a surface acceleration due to gravity of 5.40 m/s2. If your apparatus floats in the oceans on earth with 25.0 % of its volume submerged, what percentage will be submerged in the glycerine oceans of Caasi? [20.4 %]arrow_forward
- An object is released from rest while immersed within a fluid. The terminal speed of the object is measured to be 8.34 m/s. What was the speed of the object 1.551 s after being released? Let the resistive force be given by R = -bv (Assume that the gravitational force also acts)arrow_forwardWater question? on a manned orbital mission to a planet far far reaches of the galaxy, the brave astronauts observe a geyser spouting from the surface of the planet. These astronauts have measured the water to emerge from the geyser with an initial speed of 17.00 m/sec. Further measurements confirm that the gravitational acceleration on the surface of the planet to be 8.2 m/s squared. How high does the water spew up from the geyser in units of meters?arrow_forwardAn astronaut wearing a space suit floats in the middle of a room with no air and is 20.0m from any wall, the floor and the ceiling. She needs to get to the door. She has only a book and a pencil in her possession. Under these conditions, how can she get to the door?arrow_forward
- Dust particles of diameter 0.06 mm and density 1.6 g/cm3 are unsettled during high winds and rise to a height of 200 m by the time things calm down. Estimate how long it takes for the dust particles to fall back to the ground in still air at 1 atm and 30°C, and their velocity. Disregard the initial transient period during which the dust particles accelerate to their terminal velocity, and assume Stokes law to be applicable.arrow_forwardA typical military submarine can submerge to about 730 m before collapsing under the outside water pressure. How deep could the submarine dive in the water oceans on Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons? The acceleration due to gravity on Europa is 1.31 m/s2 .arrow_forwardQ.3. A battle ship weighs 127.53 MN. On filling the ship's boats on one side with water weighing 588.6 kN and its mean distance from the centre of the ship being 10 m, the angle of displacement of the plumb line is 2° 16'. Determine the metacentric height.arrow_forward
- Imagine a planet that has the same sea-level atmospheric pressure as on the Earth, but whose gravitational acceleration is only 0.57g. What is the minimum required height of a mercury barometer on this planet?arrow_forwardIf you were to create a giant tunnel through the middle of the Earth, where would you be so that the force of attraction between you and the earth be the smallest? A) Center of the earth B) 10 miles above the surface of the Earth C) 10 miles below the surface of the Earth D) Surface of the Eartharrow_forwardDiscuss the effect of coriolis force on the free fall of a body from a height H above the surface of earth.arrow_forward
