Explanation of Solution

The given solution containing 0.010 mol hydroxybenzene (HA), 0.030 mol dimethyamine (B), 0.015 molHCl.

Now, the pH and concentrations of the species can be determined as follows.

Hydroxybenzcne = HA with pKHA = 9.997

Dimethylamine = B from monoprotic BH+ with pKBH+ = 10.774

The chemical reaction that happened in the given solution can be shown as follows.

Chemical reactionsHAA+ H+KHA = 10-9.997BH+B + H+KBH+ = 10-10.774H2OH+ + OH-Kw = 10-14

Charge balance:[H+] + [BH+] = [OH-]+ [A-] + [Cl]

Mass balances:[Cl-] = 0.015 M[BH+] + [B] = 0.030 M = FB[HA] + [A-] = 0.010 M = FA

From, the above information we have seven equations and seven chemical species.

For this we have to determine the fractional composition equations as follows.

[BH+] = αBH+FB=[H+]FB[H+] + KBH+

[B] = αBFB=KBH+FB[H+] + KBH+

[HA] = αHAFA=[H+]FB[H+] + KHA

[A] = αA-FA=KHAFA[H+] + KHA

Let’s do the charge balance by substituting and we get the equation as follows and is denoted by A.

[H+] + αBH+ FB = Kw/[H+] + αA- FA+ [0.0 15 M](A)

Now, we are going to solve this equation A for [H+] by using the Solver in the spreadsheet and have the detailed information in the following spreadsheet.

The pH and concentrations of species in the given solution is mentioned in the following spreadsheet.
