To explain: Three predisposing factors for aspiration.
Concept introduction: Aspiration refers to the entry of materials such as stomach contents, food or fluid, drugs, pharyngeal secretions, or other foreign materials into the larynx and lower respiratory tract from the oropharynx or gastrointestinal tract. The destination of the aspirated materials is the right lower lung. This is because the right branching of the bronchus tends to continue almost straight down. Cough removes the aspiring materials from the upper respiratory tract.
