Answer to Problem 1E

Correct answer:  Somatostatin requires a cell-surface receptor.

Explanation of Solution

Hormones are of two types, namely, steroid hormones and peptide hormones. Steroid hormones are lipid soluble and hydrophobic. Therefore, they can easily pass through the lipid bilayer on the cell surface. A receptor on the surface of the corresponding cell surface alone is sufficient to carry out functions of steroid hormones. On the other hand, peptides hormones are hydrophilic; therefore, they cannot pass through the lipid bilayer. They require a receptor on the lipid bilayer that constitutes the cell surface in order to start a cascade that activates other cell molecules to execute the functions in the cell. As somatostatin is a peptide hormone, it requires a cell-surface receptor.
