Chapter 13, Problem 26Q
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The reason for why a double-strand break in a DNA double helix cannot be repaired by a cell has to be explained.

Concept Introduction:

DNA and its nitrogen bases:

  • • DNA is the abbreviation term of “Deoxyribonucleic Acid”. It is a complex molecule found in all living things.
  • • The primary function of DNA is to store and transmit genetic information.
  • • A base is nitrogen containing heterocyclic compound which is found in DNA
  • • There are mainly four nitrogen bases in DNA which are listed as follows:
  1. 1. Adenine
  2. 2. Guanine
  3. 3. Cytosine
  4. 4. Thymine

Complementary bases:

  • • Adenine is the complementary base of Thymine
  • • Cytosine is the complementary base of Guanine.
  • • In DNA, Adenine always makes a double bond with thymine (A=T) and cytosine always makes triple bond with guanine (GC)
