Chapter 13, Problem 5Q

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The three units that must be present in a nucleotide have to be found.

Concept Introduction:

Concept of Nucleic acids and Nucleotides:

  • • Nucleic acids are biopolymers that are essential to all forms of life.
  • • The nucleic acid is composed of nucleotides.
  • • The nucleotides are monomers that form the nucleic acid.
  • • Each monomeric unit of nucleotide are made of three components such as 5-carbon sugar, a phosphate group and a nitrogenous base.
  • • The 5-carbon sugar can be ribose or deoxyribose sugar.
  • • If the 5-carbon sugar is a ribose unit, then the overall nucleic acid is known as Ribonucleic Acid which is abbreviated as RNA.
  • • If the 5-carbon sugar is a deoxyribose unit, then the overall nucleic acid is known as Deoxyribonucleic Acid which is abbreviated as DNA.

(b)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The type of bonding that holds the three units of nucleotide has to be found.

Concept Introduction:

Covalent bond:

Covalent bond is a chemical bond that is formed by mutual sharing of electrons between atoms. The shared electron pairs are known as bonded electron pairs. The formation of a covalent bond stabilizes the attractive and repulsive forces between atoms that involve in the bonding.
