Chapter 13, Problem 50ASP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The major product for the given reaction needs to be identified.

Concept Introduction: The ring opening in epoxide is basically a reaction between nucleophile and an electrophile. In this case, oxygen atom resulting in epoxide ring act as an electrophile and other group act as a nucleophile. In the reaction of epoxide with Grignard reagent, attack of electrophile (Grignard reagent) takes place at less substituted carbon atom of C-O bond in epoxide to form alcohol as final product.

Which of the following aldehydes has the highest solubility in water? A) CH₃CH₂C(=O)H B) CH₃CH₂CH₂CH₂C(=O)H C) CH₃(CH₂)₅C(=O)H D) CH₃(CH₂)₁₀C(=O)H E) All of these have equal solubility.
Complete the following nucleophilic substitution reactions. In each reaction, show all electron pairs on both the nucleophile and the leaving group.
2. The molecules shown below are four terpineol isomers. They are isolated from plants and have distinct aromas. For example, a -terpineol is a common perfume ingredient and smells similar to lilacs. Hol H-O- a-terpineol B-terpineol Y-terpineol 4-terpineol A) Draw a structural isomer of terpineol that meet the following criteria. You should draw one unique structure for each set. You must draw each molecule twice, once as a skeletal structure and once as a complete Lewis structure showing all atoms, bonds, and lone pairs of electrons. i. Does not have a ring. ii. Has an E alkene. iii. Has a secondary alcohol. iv. Does not contain an alcohol. B) Draw a complete Lewis structure of a-terpineol showing all bonds, atoms and lone pairs of electrons.
