Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The volume of methane gas should be determined when the gas with a volume of 3.8 L at 5° C is heated to 86° C at constant pressure.
Concept introduction:
The new volume of methane gas in this case can be determined using Charles law. Charles law states that the volume of a given amount of gas has direct relation with the temperature in Kelvin at constant pressure. This law is also known as Temperature-Volume Law
The increase in volume, results in increase in temperature, and vice-versa.
In case of initial and final volumes and temperatures under constant pressure, the formula is given by:

- ook at Fig. 14.2. Why doesn't temperature increase continuously ever time? That is, why does the temperature stay constanl for periods of time?arrow_forwardHelium condenses to a liquid at 4.224 K under atmospheric pressure and remains a liquid down to the absolute zero of temperature. (It is used as a coolant to reach very low temperatures.) The vapor pressure of liquid helium at 2.20 K is 0.05256 atm. Calculate the volume occupied by 1.000 mol helium vapor under these conditions and compare it with the volume of the same amount of helium at standard temperature and pressure.arrow_forward
