Chapter 13.9, Problem 13.66P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The reagent that has to be used for the given transformation must be identified.

Concept Introduction:

In a reaction if the oxidation state of the carbon atom is decreased means, then reduction reaction has occurred.  Conversion of an aldehyde or ketone into an alcohol is known as reduction.  For the conversion of carboxylic acid to alcohol, a very strong reducing agent is required.  For conversion of aldehyde or ketone into alcohol, a mild reducing agent is required.

Some of the best reducing agent that are used for reduction reaction is sodium borohydride and lithium aluminium hydride.

Sodium borohydride is a mild reducing agent and lithium aluminium hydride is a strong reducing agent.  When ketone is reduced, secondary alcohol is obtained.  When an aldehyde is reduced, primary alcohol is obtained as product.
