Chapter 14, Problem 14.29P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

It is to be determined how a one-electron excitation from the π2 MO to the π3 MO of 1, 3-butadiene will affect the C1C2 and C2C3 bond lengths.

Concept introduction:

Electron density between adjacent atoms depends on whether the electron(s) from the contributing p orbitals reside(s) in a bonding MO or in an antibonding MO. When both electrons are in a bonding MO, the electron density is high in the region between the nuclei. This increases the bond order and shortens the bond length. When one or both electrons are excited to a high energy antibonding MO, the electron density between the nuclei decreases, leading to an increase in the bond length.

Draw cis and trans 1,2-dichloroethylene (C2H2Cl2) and predict their relative energies
Select the bonds in the 3D representation of methyl urethane below that are multiple bonds. (Hint: Consider the number of bonds attached to an atom in the image compared to the normal valence of that atom. In a valid structure, the number of bonds to an atom will equal the valence of that atom.) • Gray = C: white = H; red = 0; blue = N; dark green = Cl; brown = Br; light green = F; purple = 1; yellow = S: orange = P. • Double click to select bonds. You can zoom in and out using the mouse scroll wheel (or pinch to zoom on touch screens). ●
7 The pentadienyl radical, H2C“CH¬CH“CH¬CH2#, has its unpaired electron delocalized over three carbon atoms.(a) Use resonance forms to show which three carbon atoms bear the unpaired electron.
