Concept explainers
A rocket sled burns fuel at the constant rate of 120 lb/s. The initial weight of the sled is 1800 lb, including 360 lb of fuel. Assume that the track is lubricated and the sled is aerodynamically designed so that air resistance and friction are negligible. (a) Derive a formula for the acceleration a of the sled as a function of time t and the exhaust velocity vex of the burned fuel relative to the sled. Plot the ratio a/vex versus time t for the range 0 < t < 4 s, and check the slope of the graph at t = 0 and t = 4 s using the formula for a. (b) Determine the ratio of the velocity vb of the sled at burnout to the exhaust velocity vex.

- Non-uniformly acceleratedmotion& Motion Curves 1.. The brake mechanism used to reduce a gun recoil consists of a piston attached to a barrelmoving in the fixed cylinder filled with oil. As the barrel recoils with an initial velocity v0, the piston moves and the oil is forced through the orifices in the piston, causing the piston and the cylinder todecelerate at a rate proportional to their velocities. Put notes on steps. The wooden block (mass m = 0.6165 kg) is released from rest at A by a compressed spring (compressed length 0.6 m, undeformed length 1 m, spring constant k = 150 N/m). The block is allowed to slide through the rough horizontal surface (A to B), then along the smooth circular ramp (B to C, central angle 0 = 45°, until the block is released after point C.
