Interpretation:
The solubility of a substance most affected by increasing the temperature needs to be determined from the graph.
Concept introduction:
Solubility can be defined as maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in known amount of solvent at a given temperature and pressure. During solution formation, solute and solvent particles collide with each other, so that the solute gets dissolves in solvent. Solubility is affected by increasing the temperature of the solvent asit is associated with the kinetic energy of the solute particles. The kinetic energy of the solute particles is increased with increasing the temperature, resulting in frequent collisions between the solute particles and makes many substances to get more soluble at high temperatures.
Answer to Problem 44SSC
Aluminum sulfate shows the greatest change in solubility over the temperature range.
Explanation of Solution
Solubility of Solutes in Water at Various Temperatures:
Substance | Formula | 0 °C | 30 °C | 60 °C | 100 °C |
Aluminium sulfate | Al2(SO4)3 | 31.2 | 36.4 | 59.2 | 89.0 |
Lithium sulfate | Li2SO4 | 36.1 | 34.8 | 32.6 | --- |
Potassium Chloride | KCl | 28.0 | 34.2 | 45.8 | 56.3 |
Solubility vs. Temperature Plot
Aluminum sulfate shows the greatest change in solubility over the temperature range.
