A stringent response is also referred to as stringent control. It is a stress response of the bacteria due to amino acid starvation, fatty acid and iron limitation, heat shocks, and other stress conditions. The stringent response decreases the transcription of rRNA and tRNA genes and increases the transcription of amino acid biosynthetic genes.
