Concept Introduction:

• The Williamson ether synthesis is a reaction to converts alcohols $\left(\text{R-OH}\right)$ into ethers $\left(\text{R-O-R}\right)\text{.}$ The first step in this reaction is forming the conjugate base of the alcohol (called an alcoxide) by reacting the alcohol among sodium metal. This reaction forms hydrogen gas $\left(\text{H2}\right)$ as a byproduct.
• The ${\text{S}}_{\text{N}}\text{2}$reaction is a type of reaction mechanism that is ordinary in organic chemistry. In this mechanism, one bond is out of order and one bond is formed synchronously. In one step ${\text{S}}_{\text{N}}\text{2}$ is a variety of nucleophilic substitution reaction mechanism.
