Question
Chapter 14.7, Problem 14.3CIAP
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The definition for minimum alveolar concentration for an anesthetic has to be defined.
Concept introduction:
Anaesthetic:
A drug which is used to get rid of pains during surgery is known as an anaesthetic. Inhaled anaesthetics can be given through inhalation. Halothane, enflurane, isoflurane are the most commonly used examples.
Minimum alveolar concentration (MAC): It is usually used to express anaesthetic potency

How is “minimum alveolar concentration” for an anesthetic defined?
Indicate whether the changes in respiratory volumes or capacities described are observed A) during an acute asthma attack, B) in emphysema C) both during an acute asthma attack and in emphysema, or D) not during an acute asthma attack or in emphysema.
Note that the acute asthma attack is in a person not taking ventolin (ie no inhaler).
Decrease in total lung capacity
Increase in residual volume
Decrease in FEV1 (forced expiratory volume in one second)
Decrease in tidal volume
Decrease in expiratory reserve volume
Calculate the alveolar gas tension given the following FiO2 = 0.21, Patm = 700 Torr, pH2O = 47 Torr,RQ = 0.8, and PaCO2 = 38 Torr. Express answers in Torr.
