Interpretation:

Use the pH value given for each solution and determine the concentration of H3O+ in both milk and black coffee. Determine how much more H3O+ is present in coffee than milk.

  • Concept introduction:
    • The equilibrium constant of an acid is referred to as the Kaand uses the formula:
      Ka= [H+][A]/[HA]
    • The equilibrium constant expression for water gives us the value of Kwwhich has the following formula: Kw= [OH][H3O+]
    • We can use the equilibrium expression to determine the concentration of H3O+ ions which we use to calculate the pH of a solution using: pH = log[H3O+]
    • We can also use the OH- concentration to find pOH = log[OH]
    • The relationship of pOH and pH is: pH + pOH = 14
  • To classify:
