To determine:
The reason why the body’s skin and mucous membrane barriers are not significant factors in body’s resistance to infection by hyperthermophiles.
Introduction:
Skin is a barrier to microorganisms. However, some microbes invade the skin through natural openings of the skin, sweat glands and hair follicles. They may also enter through wound, damage or cut on the skin. There are some fungi that can enter the skin by digesting the top layers of the skin.
The mucous membranes are soft and living cells. They are present in organ systems such as gastrointestinal, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive and conjunctiva. As these membranes are soft cells, microorganisms can easily enter into the body through them. The respiratory tract is the most susceptible route for microbes.

- Consumer products including bandages, cotton balls, diapers, and contact lens solutions are routinely irradiated. There is no opposition to these products in the marketplace. Given this, why are irradiated foods not more accepted when they can prevent illness from E. coli and other pathogens?arrow_forwardWhat do you mean by chemotropism?arrow_forwardThanking you in advance for your help List the cell wall components that contribute to virulence by protecting the bacteria from immune responses. List those that contribute to virulence by eliciting toxic responses in the human hostarrow_forward
- Explain the following Sweat glands in the armpits secrete perspiration with a pH close to neutral (7.0). How does this fact help explain body odor in this area as compared to other parts of the skin? Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) preferentially destroys CD4+ cells. Specifically, what effect does this have on antibody and cell-mediated immunity? How does a phagocyte “know” it is in contact with a pathogen instead of another body cell?arrow_forwardWhat should you do if H2SO4 contacts with your skin ?arrow_forwardWhich of the following involves pseudopods? adherence of phagocytes to pathogens chemotaxis opsonization extracellular killing a & barrow_forward
- How does Mycobacterium tuberculosis gain access through that preferred portal of entry Explain how the Mycobacterium tuberculosis is able to evade innate human host defenses that prevent this from occurring. discuss specific components of your pathogen. What two features distinguish a pathogenic microbe from these commensal microbes?arrow_forward
- Increase in body temperature should increase the rate of metabolism of microbes instead of killing them. How does a fever helps our bodies fight infection?arrow_forwardPlease explain why you would, most likely, get sick when you touch a contaminated surface with your broken skin than you would if you touch the surface with healthy, intact skin?arrow_forwardIn what ways is a phagocyte a tiny container of disinfectants?arrow_forward
