A sphere has the smallest surface area possible for a drop of any given volume. This tendency towards a minimum surface is the results of surface tension. Within the liquid each particles is attracted in all directions by the particles around it. At the surface, the attraction is almost entirely downward. In a spherical drop, the attraction is almost entirely inward.
