Concept explainers
As you enter a fine restaurant, you realize that you have accidentally brought a small electronic timer from home instead of your cell phone. In frustration, you drop the timer into a side pocket of your suit coat, not realizing that the timer is operating. The arm of your chair presses the light cloth of your coat against your body at one spot. Fabric with a length L hangs freely below that spot, with the timer at the bottom. At one point during your dinner, the timer goes off and a buzzer and a vibrator turn on and off with a frequency of 1.50 Hz. It makes the hanging part of your coat swing hack and forth with remarkably large amplitude, drawing everyone’s attention. Find the value of L.

- In Washington, a solar panel facing south angled at 15 degrees receives 0.5 (+/- 0.5) kWh/m^2/day in the winter. Solar panels are 20% efficient. Another 20% of power is lost due to heat. A house uses 45 kW per day in the winter. What is the minimum number of panels needed?arrow_forward6.7 Use the differential equation approach to find i(t) for t> 0 in the circuit in Fig. P6.7 and plot the response including the time interval just prior to opening the switch. 60 12 V 30 1=0 Figure P6.7 ww 2 H (1) 12 02 ww 60arrow_forwardSuppose a battery operates a 2.25 W electric clock for 19.5 months. 1. What is the available energy content, in joules, of the battery? 2. How many years can a battery that supplies 7.75 × 104 J run a pocket calculator that consumes energy at the rate of 1.05 × 10-3 W?arrow_forward
- Your roommate leaves a 120 W fan running in your apartment. Over the course of an hour, how much thermal energy does the fan add to the air?arrow_forwardAn 80 kg astronaut has gone outside his space capsule to do some repair work. Unfortunately, he forgot to lock his safety tether in place , and he has drifted 5.0 m away from the capsule . Fortunately, he has a 1000 W portable laser with fresh batteries that will operate it for 1.0 h. His only chance is to accelerate him self toward the space capsule by firing the laser in the opposite direction. He has a 10-h supply of oxygen. How long will it take him to reach safety ?arrow_forwardWhy is the following situation impossible? A politician is decrying wasteful uses of energy and decides to focus on energy used to operate plug-in electric clocks in the United States. While many people use their smartphone as an alarm clock, he estimates that there are still 270 million plug-in alarm clocks in continuous use. The clocks transform energy taken in by electrical transmission at the average rate 2.50 W. The politician gives a speech in which he complains that, at today’s electrical rates, the nation is losing $100 million every year to operate these clocks.arrow_forward
- LED bulbs are much more efficient at producing light than are traditional incandescent bulbs. They initially cost much more, but last far longer and use much less electricity An LED bulb that produces as much light as a 100 W incandescent bulb uses only 12.5 W of power. The LED bulb lasts 15,000 hours, on the average, and costs £8.00, whereas the cost of an incandescent bulb was only £0.75, but it lasted just 750 hourS. Assume that electricity costs £0 122 per kilowatt-hour and that the bulbs are on for 4.0 h per day. Part A What is the total cost (including the price of the bulbs) to run incandescent bulbs for 3.0 years? Express your answer in pounds. I'm not sure why.arrow_forwardWhy is the answer not approx 0.58 kWh as P = (0.2)(120) = 24 W = 0.024 kW and if E = P*t then E = 0.024 kW * 24 h = 0.58 kWh? Is this not the correct answer? The solution above multiples 24 by 60? Why?arrow_forward
