Question
Chapter 15, Problem 52P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The main challenges in the development of nuclear fusion reactors should be explained.
Concept Introduction:
In a nuclear reactor when uranium is bombarded with neutron, plutonium is formed. With each such reaction a huge amount of energy is produced with more number of neutrons. This leads to a chain reaction. When all the uranium is almost consumed to give plutonium, the fuel rods are removed from the reactor.
To dissolve plutonium from the fuel rods, strong acids are used which creates a large volume of liquid waste containing the radioactive nuclei with hazardous chemicals. These chemicals then have negative impact on environment as they can cause air, water and land pollution.
