Concept explainers
Watch this video (http://openstaxcollege.org/l/emotions) to learn about physical responses to emotion. The autonomic system, which is important for regulating the homeostasis of the organ systems, is also responsible for our physiological responses to emotions such as fear. The video summarizes the extent of the body’s reactions and describes several effects of the autonomic system in response to fear. On the basis of what you have already studied about autonomic function, which effect would you expect to be associated with parasympathetic, rather than sympathetic, activity?

- Figure 35.26 Which of the following statements is false? The parasympathetic pathway is responsible for relaxing the body, while the sympathetic pathway is responsible for preparing for an emergency. Most preganglionic neurons in the sympathetic pathway originate in the spinal cord. Slowing of the heartbeat is a parasympathetic response. Parasympathetic neurons are responsible for releasing norepinephrine on the target organ, while sympathetic neurons are responsible for releasing acetylcholine.arrow_forwardWhen comparing the Parasympathetic and Sympathetic systems, what conclusion can be reached with respect to many of the organs and their functions shown in Model 1?arrow_forwardWhich of the following could be used to describe the parasympathetic nervous system? Select all that apply. Short preganglionic, long postganglionic fibers. O long preganglionic, short postganglionic fibers. Known to be active during "rest and digest" responses. Stimulates ciliary muscles of the eye, which makes the lens bulge for close vision. O Active during "fight or flight" responses. increases heart rate « Previous Nextarrow_forward
- All the following regarding sympathetic nervous system are true except: * It is involved in stress & emergency conditions. It has a vasodilatory effect on skeletal muscle blood vessels during rest. All its preganglionic fibres are cholinergic. Its stimulation increases the cardiac properties. Many of the usual causes wereruled out. It was not a stroke, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes,or thyroid dysfunction. The next most obvious cause wasmedication, so her pharmacist had to be consulted. Theside effect of a drug meant to help her sleep had resultedin changes in motor control. What regions of the nervoussystem are likely to be the focus of haloperidol side effects?arrow_forwardWhich of the following is an example of antagonistic control? O The parasympathetic nervous system originates from the brain stem and pelvic nerves, while the sympathetic arises from the thoracic and lumbar spinal cord. O Sympathetic stimulation causes renin secretion by the kidneys, but the kidneys are not innervated by the parasympathetic nervous system. O Parasympathetic stimulation causes bronchoconstriction, while sympathetic stimulation causes bronchodilation. O The vagus nerve innervates much of the viscera, changing the function of each of them independently of the others.arrow_forward
